The tombak (or tonbak/zarb) is the principal Persian goblet drum, hand-carved from wood (often walnut) with a goat or camel skin head. Originating from Iran, it is fundamental to Persian classical music and is played horizontally across the lap. Known for extreme versatility, it is played using all fingers and palms to produce distinct “tone” and “bak” sounds.
